It's time to believe in the Good Guys again

4/29/2014

Comments

The media puts so much focus on the bad guys. The media glorifies mass murderers to the point where I'm confident that most Americans could name at least one bad guy. But ask them to name some of the good guys? I'm confident few Americans could come up with a single name. What does that say about our culture and where we're going?

I've always believed in the good in people, and I always will.

It's time to believe in the Good Guys again. We are the 5 million men and women of the National Rifle Association of America.

Review: NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home

The NRA started as a marksmanship organization in 1871, and the courses it produces are top notch. The "Personal Protection Outside the Home" is no exception to this rule.

For anyone who wants to get their CCW (conceal carry weapon) permit, I highly recommend this course.

Chris Cheng Interview with The Blaze - "This is Who I am"

4/28/2014

Comments

I just got back from the National Rifle Association Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana and had a great weekend. This morning, The Blaze posted an interview regarding my new role as an NRA News Commentator.

One of the main messages in the article is that I want people to know who I am, and that it's OK for us to be different and disagree. I'm not expecting everyone to agree with me, but it's my hope that I can change the conversation and connect with folks who understand that our diversity and differences are our strength, and it's what makes America great.

The other main point I made is that “We should never have to be afraid to be who we are."

Here's the link to the full article: www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/04/28/hes-an-openly-gay-former-google-employee-who-lives-in-san-francisco-and-hes-one-of-the-newest-faces-of-the-nra/

I'm ecstatic to announce that I'm joining the NRA News Commentators Team. The team creates opinion and editorial pieces on the Second Amendment and related stories, controversies, and issues. I have a lot to say, and I'm excited to share my opinion.

My first video should appear in the next day or so at www.NRANews.com/commentators. My bio videos is embedded below.

There a lot of people who helped make this happen, but the primary thanks goes to the guys at Salient Arms, one of my sponsors, for introducing me to Colion Noir and the Commentators team. The life lesson for me is that you can accomplish so much more when you have great friends looking out for you.

And to my fans, a huge thanks to you for giving me the energy and motivation to keep having fun!

Washington Times & NRA Third Century Profile

This is definitely not your grandfather's NRA. And it hasn't been for a long time.

Diversity exists in the NRA and gun owning community at large. I know because I have spent two years making it my job to learn as much as I can about gun culture and gun owners. Gay, straight, male, female, Asian, Latino, Black, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, etc, etc, etc are all part of the gun owning community.

The Second Amendment is a right for everyone to exercise. A right that over 100,000,000 million Americans, a third of our country, exercise every day. And that number does not even include non-gun owners who support the Second Amendment.

I am proud to help break stereotypes wherever, whenever because simply put, stereotypes are stupid. Stereotypes tap into the stupid part of our brain (the amygdala) which controls fear and emotion. I'm very excited to move forward with the NRA in our Third Century.

Chris on NRA's Cam & Co to discuss Mozilla controversy

4/13/2014

The NRA's Cam & Company show is not just about guns and the Second Amendment. Cam covers many different topics of the week, and I was invited onto the show to chat about my experience in Silicon Valley and my perspectives on the Brenden Eich situation.

In short, the (now former) Mozilla CEO, Brenden Eich, was appointed CEO by the Mozilla board. It quickly became known that he had donated to California's Proposition 8 campaign back in 2008. Prop 8 was an anti-gay proposition that made same-sex marriage illegal in California, and has since been overturned.

Part of this important discussion is how CEOs and companies are now not only being judged on their products and their ability to satisfy shareholders, but their political stances are influencing the business as well.

Should a CEO's stance on same-sex marriage, guns, or any other issue impact his or her ability to lead an organization?

Listen more below to hear our great discussion.

Opinion: Repeal Bush 41-era policy that disarms our armed forces

Another "gun free zone," another attack where a crazy person shoots himself after killing three victims and injuring another 16 people. Except this time, the shooting was on a U.S. military base in Texas, on home soil. And the same base where a similar shooting happened in 2009.

The Ft. Hood shooting that occurred earlier this week got me thinking about why there were so many victims on a U.S. military base. You'd think that our armed forces would be, well, armed in order to protect themselves. In fact, only military law enforcement and security personnel are allowed to be armed on base.

Department of Defense directive 5210.56 was enacted under President George H.W. Bush, which in part says the following:

(D1) The authorization to carry firearms shall be issued only to qualified personnel when there is a reasonable expectation that life or DoD assets will be jeopardized if firearms are not carried. Evaluation of the necessity to carry a firearm shall be made considering this expectation weighed against the possible consequences of accidental or indiscriminate use of firearms. DoD personnel regularly engaged in law enforcement or security duties shall be armed.

Wow. I had no idea about this policy until some of my Facebook fans commented on my page.

Military personnel should have the option to open carry or conceal carry. This is all about choice and freedom. President Obama and the Department of Defense must repeal directive 5210.56 and allow our soldiers to protect themselves from threats, both foreign and domestic.

Chris Cheng speaks about Senator Leland Yee on NRA News with Cam & Co

If you live outside of California or don't follow gun news, you may not have heard about California State Senator Leland Yee and how he was recently arrested on suspicion of international firearms trafficking, bribery, and public corruption amongst many other charges by the FBI.

What is absolutely disgusting about this man is that he is one of the leading anti-gun proponents in the state of California, and here he is trying to restrict law abiding citizens from owning firearms while selling rocket propelled grenade launchers and full auto weapons to line his own pockets. While I am appalled at yet another public servant losing the trust of Americans, the silver lining here may be that the entire 2014 anti-gun agenda in California is probably going to stall since it will all be linked to the Yee scandal.

For more of my thoughts, I was recently on NRA News with Cam & Co on March 31st. Video:

Sorry it's been a few weeks since my last post. I have been on the road in Tennessee, Texas, and Arizona for a conference, shooting, fishing, and vacation. At the Professional Outdoor Media Association conference in Knoxville,  I won a cooking contest against seven other teams. My cooking partner and I unseated the reigning champs. Looks like I might go from Top Shot to Top Chef! I'll post about the cook-off soon.

I wish this post was to say that I had some news as to whether there was going to be a Season 6 of Top Shot, but I have no idea. I'll be sure to post any news I hear on my blog.

This past weekend, I was shooting in the Superstition Mystery Mountain 3-gun match in Mesa, AZ. In the first pic, we see world champion Taran Butler strapped to a chair and turned 90 degrees for the shooting position. Very Top Shot-esque!

I got to see my friend Michelle Viscusi of Team Glock and Top Shot Season 4 fame, who was spectating since she lives in the area. I also got to catch up witworld champion Bob Vogel also dropped inand many other shooting friends. It was my first match of the year and I'm rusty like many other folks and I'm also competing less this year and hunting more. This all means less time to practice, but I'm still having a ton of fun nonetheless.

In my squad, we had Maggie Reese (Top Shot Season 2), Mike Voigt (Top Shot expert), Taran Butler (Top Shot expert), Jamie Franks (Top Shot Season 2) and Robert Vogel (Top Shot expert) was taking a short break from his worldwide pistol competition travels.

Picture
The competition circuit is full of really great shooters, and great people. While I enjoy shooting, I really enjoy being able to catch up with all my friends. If you haven't gotten out to shoot 3-gun yet and are interested, contact your local ranges to see if they offer 3-gun competitions.
